Valeria Salazar's loss in singles ended Syracuse's match against Miami. She went down in two sets, 7-5, 7-6.

No. 7 seed Syracuse (14-8, 7-7 Atlantic Coast) lost its rematch battle against No. 2 seed Miami (18-4, 13-2) on Friday, falling 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

Unlike the teams’ previous encounter when Miami won 6-1, the sets mostly dragged out longer.

The Orange got on the scoreboard early with a quick doubles point from Anna Shkudun and Dina Hegab. Soon after, No. 33 ranked doubles team Gabriela Knutson and Valeria Salazar upset No. 9 ranked Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang in a tight 7-6 match.

Singles, though, were a different story for the Orange as Miami jumped on the board quick and early. Libi Mesh fell to Clara Tanielian 0-6, 1-6 right off the bat. Then Maria Tritou lost to Silvia Fuentes 4-6, 0-6.

Anna Shkudun, No. 62 in the nation in singles, was next to lose against No. 6 singles player Stephanie Wagner by a score of 6-4, 6-2.

Knutson, the 81st -ranked singles player, continued her strong season into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-5 performance against No. 61 Zhang.

The match ended when Valeria Salazar lost in a second-set tie-breaker to No. 8 singles player Sinead Lohan. While both sets were close, Lohan pulled away at the tail end, winning 7-5, 7-6.

Dina Hegab’s match was left unfinished after Miami secured the fourth and meet-winning point.

The Orange will wait for the NCAA tournament’s seeding to be announced. The field includes 64 teams and SU ranks No. 27 in the nation.
